A Former Chef's Notes on Kitchen Design

As a former chef, I understand the importance of having a well-designed kitchen. A properly designed kitchen can not only make cooking more efficient and enjoyable, but it can also increase the value of your home. If you’re planning on redesigning your kitchen or building a new one, here are some tips from my experience that can help you create a functional and beautiful kitchen.

1. Consider the Work Triangle

The work triangle is a basic principle of kitchen design that ensures that the three main areas of the kitchen, the refrigerator, stove, and sink, are in a triangle shape. This layout is designed to optimize efficiency and minimize the amount of movement required to complete tasks. When designing your kitchen, make sure to consider the work triangle and place these three areas in a way that makes sense for your cooking style and preferences.

2. Focus on Functionality

When designing a kitchen, it’s important to focus on functionality above all else. Think about how you use your kitchen and what your needs are. Do you need more storage space? Do you need a larger countertop for prep work? Is there a specific type of appliance you want? Make a list of your priorities and design your kitchen around them. Don’t get caught up in trendy design features that may look good but don’t serve a practical purpose.

3. Choose Quality Materials

The kitchen is one of the most heavily used areas of the home, so it’s vital to choose high-quality materials that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. This includes materials for your countertops, flooring, cabinets, and appliances. While it may be tempting to choose cheaper materials to save money, in the long run, investing in quality can save you money because the life of your kitchen will be much longer.

4. Consider Lighting

Proper lighting is essential in a kitchen. It not only allows you to see what you’re doing but also sets the mood and creates a welcoming atmosphere. When designing your kitchen, make sure to consider both natural and artificial lighting. You’ll also want plenty of task lighting for areas such as the stove and sink, and consider adding dimmer switches for more ambient lighting when entertaining.

5. Don’t Forget about Storage

One of the biggest challenges in any kitchen is finding enough storage space. When designing your kitchen, make sure to consider all of your storage needs, including cabinets, drawers, and shelving. Think about how you use your kitchen and what types of items you need to store. A big game changer for me was having base cabinets that have shelves that pull out. This makes accessing pots and pans that would typically get lost in the back of the cabinets easier. You can also store larger kitchen machines such as mixers and food processors.

6. Plan for Traffic Flow

The flow of traffic in a kitchen is another important consideration when designing a space. Make sure that there is enough space for multiple people. Move around and work in the kitchen at the same time. Avoid placing appliances or furniture in high-traffic areas, and consider adding a kitchen island to create a natural traffic flow.

7. Choose the Right Appliances

Choosing the right appliances is an essential part of kitchen design. Are you a baker? If so, maybe you want an electric oven with a gas cooktop or double ovens. Do you want a microwave over the stove, or would you like it as a drawer pull-out so that everyone can access it easily? Also, don’t forget the style and finishes of your appliances. Do they match well with your countertops and cabinets, or are they built-ins?

Designing a kitchen requires careful consideration of both form and function. Don’t forget to add personal touches to reflect your unique style. Focusing on the work triangle, functionality, lighting, and storage will create a timeless focal point for your family and friends to gather and create memories.
